Bruce Randolph School

English Language Acquisition Program

In Denver Public Schools, there are two English Language Acquisition program options for students who are identified as English Language Learners (ELLs), and are learning English as another language. Bruce Randolph School offers both ELA Program options 1 and 2.

Option 1:  Bilingual or “TNLI” program with content instruction in Spanish and English (students have English Language Development (ELD) classes)

  • Referred to in DPS as “Transitional Native Language Instruction” or a “TNLI” program.
  • Enrollment in Spanish instruction is prioritized for native Spanish speakers with beginning and early intermediate levels of English Language Proficiency*.
  • Dual language programs in Spanish and English are available at specific schools in DPS.
  • Classes instructed in Spanish are also referred to in DPS as “ELA-S” or English Language Acquisition – Spanish.
  • This choice is indicated on the Parent Permission Form as Option 1 (PPF1).

Option 2: All-English program with all content instruction in English (students have ELD classes)

  • Classes instructed in English are also referred to in DPS as “ELA-E” or English Language Acquisition – English.
  • This choice is indicated on the Parent Permission Form as Option 2 (PPF2)

In Bruce Randolph’s bilingual “TNLI” program (Option 2) in 2015-16, Spanish instruction is available in some classes, and Spanish support from a Spanish-qualified Resource Teacher is available in others (see chart below).
